How can I play wma files?

I am working on editting some sounds that are wma files and I cannot even get them to play in windows media player. Is this some kind of new file type that is not made for computers? I just want to get them to play in media player so I can segment out what I need. Any idea?

What version of WMP are you using? I think WMP versions 9 and up should play wma files.

hmmm…l am using 9…maybe I should dload 10?

WMA files are usually copyrighted with DRM (Digital Rights Management), for the most part you can’t use them without a security certificate or special licenses.

hhmmm. Thanks 2big. Weird that my client would send me locked files. I am looking up wma right now. BUt my clients are not real computer savvy, so I doubt they even know they sent me locked files. Is there something on my end I can do? Or do I have to ask them to get a licensed copy of their own music? How do you create wma files anyway?

Oh that’s right - your WMA files may be protected. But, even so, you will be prompted for a license. Have you tried using WMP’s File | Open to open the WMA file? It could be that no program is assigned as the default for opening WMA files.

EDIT: I convert all of my DVD Live Music videos into WMA. I use the free Windows Media Encoder. It comes with tools that allow me to crop out portions of the audio (or video if you are dealing with WMV), and there are other tools that I never really used.

EDIT2: If all else fails, try WMP10. It’s quite a bit better than 9 imo.

yea when I do that it takes me to a windows webpage, that ask me to miggrate licenses> When I do it say some about not being abe to share this file (I am not tring to share the %#$# file). This is weird. I am just trying to edit out their song and use snippets in a webpage. I am not sure what to do from here. Likewise the client is not sure either. If anyone has some insight I would greatly appreciate it.

Hmm - if the content is licensed, then using WMP10 won’t help much either :frowning:

Your client can go to Tools | Manage Licenses, Backup the license, and send you a copy of the license file. You can then use his license. Your client may have accidentally selected the option for “Protect Media Files” while ripping or encoding the songs.

thx guys. I will have them try that. Funny cause I tries to explain this and they were like “huh?”

Typical client…

There are probably some illegitimate ways of taking off the protection/faking a license. It seems if you had the client’s permission to see/edit the file, then couldn’t get in trouble for forcing something to let you see it.

well I am going to let them wrestle with it since that is not what they are paying me for at the moment. But I think they may come running since they dont even know how they locked them and one of the members family member is who made the cd… SO we will see.

Actually, DRM is pretty secure, only one known guy has been able to come up with a stable bypass for it and that was an older version. I think the latest version is 10.

actually I just found a very easy way to circumnvent it. But I will not post it because it walks the line and could be used for evil…
