I’m curious about this. So in Canada, I’m using Shaw Cable for my cable TV. I get all these channels. How are these channels related to Shaw Cable?
Better example (for you U.S. cohorts): Cox offers cable TV, how does Fox Media do business with Cox? So Fox is a content producer (they make shows like House, American Idol, etc) and they sell the rights to broadcast these shows to Cox? What about other cable (or even satellite) TV providers? If they do, would cable TV providers be the ones managing TV commercials? So like if I want to air a commercial, who do I talk to?
Yeah Wikipedia is a bunch of BS on the controversies and conspiracies of each company, so no help there… If anyone knows about this stuff, post something cause I want to know.
You would only be able to run the commercial on local programming… and even then you have to do a bunch to get the commercial on the air. Cable is predominately not showing commercials for the local area.
In canada do you guns have Canadian shows (other than corner gas)?
I think so, but they suck so bad I never watch them.
I’m not trying to air a commercial, but I want to know the logistics behind these operations. So who is really in charge of:
- Show slots (what plays at 8pm mondays, 9pm tuesdays, etc)
- Commercial placements? National, or local?
- Who benefits from commercial placements?
- Is there a royalty contract between show producers (who are they?) and publishers (who are these?)? Or is there an absolute one-time benefit for show producers?
Here is the way I understand it:
- Show slots are controlled by the channel (fox, mtv, etc)
- Commercial placements are also controlled by the channel but the national commercials are paid to the channel while the local advertisements are paid to the cable company (whether they get to keep all of that money, i dont know).
- Well I guess you could say if one channel does particularly well it benefits both that channel and the cable company.
- Show producers receive money each time one of their episodes airs and are paid by the station that runs that program (if a show is switched to a different channel then the rights change over).
Someone can correct me if im wrong but I believe it works fairly close to that.
