How should a product team evaluate AI features that save time but make user decisions less legible?

I’m trying to frame a decision for a product review: an AI-assisted workflow clearly reduces effort, but it also hides intermediate reasoning and makes outcomes harder for users to audit or explain later. Beyond generic “trust” concerns, what practical framework do teams use to decide when speed is worth reduced legibility? I’m especially interested in tradeoffs across onboarding, regulated domains, support burden, and long-term user skill atrophy.

Use a reversibility test: if a user may need to justify, teach, correct, or appeal the outcome later, legibility is a product requirement, not a nice-to-have, so AI can speed drafting but should not hide the decision path in regulated or support-heavy flows.
