Image Panning Help

I just had a look at the image panning tutorial, is there a way that this can be modified so that when for example clicking on a button within the scrolling movieclip the panning stops and something else happens and then when the button is clicked again or when an animation finishes we can activate that panning again when the user moves his mouse…?
