I am trying to increase the memory in my Mac Mini (1.25 ghz ed.) from 256 mb to 512 mb. I called up Apple and they say they require you to have an Apple Retail Store install it, as it needs to have the power running during installation or some crap like that.
I called up my local Apple Retail Store and they tell me they will only install their own ram, which after installation fees, is $150.
I go to the Crucial website, and find they sell the same ram for $53. It seems like it would be impossible to install their ram, as Apple does not allow you to open the Mini, and the store won’t install it for you.
I decided to investigate by asking Crucial this time. Darcy (the lady I was talking to) told me that the ram came with instructions for installation. I was a bit worried that this would void my warranty with Apple, but she told me, “Absolutely not.”
I’m not sure I believe Crucial on this. I feel between Scylla and Charybdis on this one; if I go with Crucial, I run the risk of my computer breaking, and if I go with Apple, I’m down $150.
Who’s telling the truth?
Cheers
