Alright, this is really ticking me off, so if anyone can help me, it’d be much aprreciated.
Heres the story: A few days ago, I noticed something was off, so I ran avast! AntiVirus and discovered I had quite a few nasty virus, including several memory viruses (explaining why my computer ran so slow). I had them repaired, and then, nothing worked. After a few minutes of running, my computer would lock up, and NOTHING worked. I realize that this isn’t good, and decide to reinstall my os (Windows XP). Thankfully, I have two harddrives, so all my programs are on one, and the other is JUST Windows XP.
So that’s working all fine. Doom 3 is installled, much fun insues, up until I try to connect to the internet. My ISP is Earthlink Dial-up (I live in the boonies of NJ, so we’re just starting to get Broadband up here), and i’m not sure if anyone’s familiar with Earthlink, but you generally connect through a program, Earthlink’s Total Access 2004 (new one is 2k5). Since I reinstalled my os, I also needed to reinstall TA2k4. So I connect to Earthlink using the XP Connection wizard (option 2 from Earthlink). Now comes the problem.
Modem dials correctly, connects at 53.8k, and then…NOTHING!!! IE doesn’t connect, Firefox doesn’t connect (wondering if 0.9 is to blame?), and the software used to download the required files for TA2k4 doesn’t connect. MAYBE, just maybe, if I ask really nicely and offer it milk and cookies with some lemon icebox pie, it MIGHT connect. I’m amazed i’m able to get here. So any help would be much appreciated, cuz this is really beginning to piss me off.
So you are able to get on the internet, it’s just random? If so, I’d contact Earthlink, it’s their software, they should do something about it. Also, I’m thinking of driver problems, make sure you have your modem/ethernet card driver installed. The ones XP came with might not be updated to suit Earthlink.
we need to see the ping command first - then the IP address
it would also be good to run a trace route as well that way if it is the ISP you can tell them what switch is down…
