along with what coppertop just said, it’s genious and is awesome for two and a half reasons:
1 - it’s a great way to check up on what music your close friends are listening to. my best friend from high school goes to a college half way across america. we were both huge music fans of the indie music genre. we relied on each other to let each other know about some cool new band. well, it’s hard now. so all i have to do is check up on his user account in the group i created for my hometown friends. then i can see what he’s been listening too lately.
2 - going along the same lines: it’s a good way to learn new music the site matches stuff you listen to with new upstart labels and bands. this way, a lot of the indie scene gets recognition by people who appreciate them.
1/2 - you can have a forum for whatever group you create. I’m in a bunch of groups. mostly are for a specific band. for example, in the Modest Mouse group in belong too, i can just go to the forum to check on news on the band, discussion about songs/album, and just converse with other people who appreciate the band.
the forum system is a good way to consolidate and centralize specific topics for forum discussion.
