Laggy Scrolling

Hey guys,

I just did a reformat and my scrolling is messed up. This never happened before. If I go to a page where it requires scrolling to see the rest of it (like kirupaforum), it lags and stops and moves and stops some more and moves some more. Before it used to flow smoothly.

This happens to any folder on my computer that needs to be scrolled.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Thanks.

For IE, i don’t think there is that problem.

For firefix/mozilla, there is an option i think, in Options. “Smooth Scrolling” or something i forget.

I have both IE and Firefox - on both of them it’s laggy. I think it might be something with my computer…

Have you installed the latest graphics card drivers? A lot of the time, laggy scrolling could be caused by poor 2D acceleration due to bad/outdated drivers.

Well the thing is - I just reformatted. So all I installed was flash player, shockwave player, firefox, aim and my internet.

And everytime I type a message to someone and press enter - it makes a beep sound that comes out of the inside of my computer (not the speakers/headphones).

Where can I get the new drivers?

What graphics card do you have? Windows, by default, provides really outdated drivers for your hardware. There is 9/10 chance you either have an ati (http://www.ati.com) or an nvidia ([url=“http://www.nvidia.com”]http://www.nvidia.com). You can download the drivers from either of those two URLs :ear:

Well I have nVidia Geforce 5200 - that I already know. I think. How do I make sure what graphic card I have?

After I go to the download drivers section, which one do I select?

Also - I think I need to download a soundcard driver to stop the beeping :).

For the graphics card driver, use the one here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.77 The driver works on all GeForce cards, so your 5200 will be supported for that.

Yeah, you should install your sound drivers also. Formatting and installing XP, for the most part, only installs Windows-related stuff. For the 3rd party hardware, you should make an attempt and install the drivers separately

There we go! I just went to nVidia.com - downloaded the graphic drivers and restarted my computer, which is the exact link you provided. The scrolling is perfect now. Thanks a lot kirupa :thumb:.

I’ll get to the sound cards later :P.

BTW - It confirmed I have a Geforce FX 5200 :).

:beam:

I knew exactly it was the graphics card drivers when I read the title of your thread. But all has been said and done already… :sigh:

me too, experienced it before:sigh:
always get the most up-to-date drivers after a format!
