New product: Macromedia Central
The biggest story from San Fransisco and FlashForward today was the announcement of a brand new consumer product: Macromedia Central
People on the FlashCoders list have been onto this for quite some time, but now it’s revealed. Macromedia Central will become a way to distribute Flash-made applications.
Central is nothing less than a stroke of genious. It is an app that sits on a users desktop and makes it really easy to add the Flash applications you choose. What really makes this a great idea is that Central has a special caching system built into so that dynamic apps will work even when the user is not connected. Macromedia calls this “the occasionally-connected application” that will detect when it’s connected and grab the data it needs.
Central also makes it easy to sell applications and content. Content may have an expiry based on when it was installed to allow “try before you buy” and the system allows for easy updates. Central is sheduled to be released this summer, but is announced now as a beta to build up content for the launch.
