Maintaining SEO ranking during a site redesign

As the title suggests, I’ll be redesigning a site soon that already has pretty good Google ranking. I want to make sure that as the site files change, it doesn’t erase the good ranking the current site has built up over time. Is there anything I should do or watch out for as I go through this process?

Thanks

I’m doing a similar thing at the moment.

it depends on a lot of things - is the copy on the site going to remain the same, or is it likely to change? Make sure you pay attention to the keywords in the copy/ meta tags, and if the copy is changing, adjust your keywords so that they match.

In my experience, if you completely redesign a site, it sometimes does take a dip in search engine rankings for a short while, but so far, the rankings have always recovered after a month or so. Just make sure you adhere to the usual SEO guidelines and you should be fine.

Redesigning a website is always a good time to look at the current SEO strategies and practices that are in place in the current site. Look and see if there’s anything missing (sitemap, reciprical links, 404’s etc) and try to add it in the new design.
