Hello well lets get to the point Im new to this and I made a picture :?)
I’m posting it here asking for critisism and then once your done making fun of me you can either post some of your own stuff, or you can challenge me by giving me an image to mess with. Thereby either way you’ll have fun and I’ll possibly get better at photo editing … owch my head :hangover:
The bit at the bottom saying shoo was actualy accidental
the first thing i look at in any photo manip is for general inconsistencies… here the main problem is that the photo is actually relatively sharp, but your banner and plane additions are quite blurry. So they automatically look like they don’t belong there.
secondly, i don’t quite know what that white/light line on the left (about the 1/3rd mark) is… but i notice it and it doesn’t make sense to me. Not a big deal, but confusing.
then there’s a few details: firstly, the banner wouldn’t really fly like that, it’d be rippling and distorted (the text is just straight on here). Its a difficult thing to manipulate effective, i don’t think i’d be able to do it really realistically, but it does certainly affect it a lot.
Another thing that a lot of people forget is reflections and shadows. It’s tricky because generally you’re concentrating on the main part of the manip, but it’s one of those things where if you forget, people will just know that something is wrong, even if they can’t pick it. So in your case, the banner should definitely have some effect on the water (a white reflection, but obviously not just a copy of the banner, needs to be rippled)… the plane might be too high to reflect, dunno.
so there you go. Keep at it, you’ll only get better!
thank you I was wondering when someone was going to reply with some comments.
yes errr… the plane is very blury because I used the magic wand tool to pull it out of another photo but it came out a bit distorted so I blured it a bit to make it look a bit less pixely but your right it does contrast with the rest of the picture, actualy can anyone sugest a better way to yoink things out of other pictures besides the magic wand tool please?
The light line is where I cut the background in half using the lasso tool and brought it to the front so that part of the banner was behind part of the background … if that makes sense … its suposed to look like the banner was snagged in that tree.
And the banner is supposed to be snagged in the tree hence the non realistic flying of the banner and the smoke due to the plane straining its engines to try and un-snag it, kinda unrealistic :ponder: but hey I’m learning from mistakes
The first thing you want to do is make sure both images are the same resolution. If you try to pull a 72ppi image into a 300ppi image you are probably going to have problems with pixilation.
ok still on the first one to help you out… if you wanted the background to be in front of the banner so it blocks it out, you shouldn’t just cut the b/g and paste it over the top. Just use a mask on the banner so you can get rid of the bit you want to disappear. its easier and more efficient. If you later decided you wanted to adjust the background or whatever, you would have to do it twice if it was in two parts.
in regards to the plane, what canisMajor said about different resolutions is partially true… it’s always preferable to have high-res versions so that theres more data allowing better clarity and more flexibility. however, they don’t HAVE to be the same dpi. If i’m working at 300dpi and i find an image i want that is at 72dpi, it’s only a problem if i need it to be large within my pic. It’ll just be smaller by default and cause problems IF i want it big.
and you should pretty much never use the magic wand. it makes sloppy selections and is only meant as a quick selection, never as the final precise version. If you’re dealing with something that has sharp, clear edges (like a plane) then you could try the rectangular marquee/lassoo - zoom up heaps to get the curves smooth. If you have a tablet (i.e wacom) then simply use the quickmask option to paint a selection… this is good because you can do it for harder things as well (like trying to select hair or fur). But if you’re using a mouse, it tends to be hard to get nice selections with the normal lassoo or painting, though it can be done and i used to do it sometimes.
the Extract filter is meant to be ok as well, but i never bothered play around with it very much.
once you have the selection, you may need to blur or feather the edge of the selection a little to make it realistic, but i dont’ suggest blurring the whole image as this won’t help.
Yeah I used the lasso tool in my second picture to cut the boat out and then zomed in and erased any exess, It worked much better than the magic wand.
But I never tryed using the other lasso tool before I guess that would have been a better chioce with the boat considering it has mostly straight edges.
Another picture coming soon I’m going to spend longer on this one though.
On your second one the boat looks too big. Take a look at the bridge in the background - would it fit under it? Also look at the refelction of the bushes just after the bridge to give you an idea of how yours should look. The lighting of the boat could also do with altering slightly. Study the way the lighting is on the rest of the photo. Its always worthwhile scrutinising the images before you go ahead and add something to give you an good idea of what you can do to make it look more realistic.
As for your cutouts, I would suggest you use the pen tool to make a path. If you zoom in close enough you can get a good detailed path. Then just make a selection from the path.
