Patterens how to ? for really good ones

I need to find a way to make really nice patterens that tile. Something like http://insidecg.com/feature.php?id=151 background. Photoshop has a basic filter but it makes really ugly junk most of the time… How can I make a really nice intricate design like that tile ??
