I’m normally very, very quiet in this particular section of the forums. While I do enjoy looking over sites and reading critiques on designs, I myself am very much not a designer. My current site (www.coreyoneil.com) will attest to that. It was done in a big hurry as more of a placemarker than anything else - just something to hold work.
Well, I’ve finished some larger projects recently and would like to finally do my site right before putting them online. A friend of mine, Profey, was kind enough to start working out a design for my site. He had done the layout for my portfolio section, but since then it’s been stagnant. I’ve been busy with other things, and Profey has recently gone back to university in the UK. Since he’s (understandably) busy, I was hoping to take the layout he gave to me and fine tune it here with all of you lovely designers. While I may not know most of you personally, I do keep up with the chatter in this forum and respect your opinions.
Right then, so here’s what was Profey’s latest revision: http://www.profey.com/zeta/corO-New_v2.3-dark.gif
I enjoy this layout. Profey had come up with it based around suggestions I made when he was first brainstorming. I like working with something clean and simple, since the focus of the site will be my code and not the design, so I don’t want it to be too distracting.
I do have some reservations with this layout, though. As you can see, Profey incorporated several blog-type elements such as tags and comments for each portfolio piece. I’m not sure I’m comfortable with having passersby leaving comments on my work (at least not in the portfolio itself), and as you can see from the links at the top I’m already going to have a blog, so I’d rather not repeat those elements in two separate sections of the site.
So I’ve cut out what I feel is unnecessary.
The portfolio section would now be the links at the top, a Flash-based nav bar for choosing projects, and then the selected project itself along with a more limited footer.
What does everyone think? Do you agree with the slimming down that I’ve done? Are there aspects of the core design that you’re liking or not liking? I’m finally in a position to set some time aside and put this into action, so I’m excited to get started. Thank you all so much for your time!
