I want to create my portfolio. Is there any good site/tutorial ?
You really just have to do it yourself. Look at other peoples and get a few IDEAS from them. I dont think there are tuts because its such a wide ting.
yeh, a portfolio should be just as much a work of ‘art’ as the pieces you put into it, so it should end up being an extension of who you are/what you want to represent. About the only things to consider are cross platform functionality and keeping it somewhat businesslike for potential clients. There’s a fine line between doing a great portfolio site, and making a personal experimental site.
btw, new here; hello everyone
welcome to the forums 712
and also, try to make something original which will keep the attention of potential clients, if your portofolio has a nice layout or is interactive (flaaaash) then people will pay more attention to it…
sad but true. flash sells
I’ll take an innovative (d)html site over a flash site anyday tho
Creativity sells. Don’t have a flash site for the sake of having a flash site.
I agree with you Rengirl… A site that really sucks in Flash is a great pity, when you see the real power of it…
watch out for the dhtml thingies that only work in IE though…
A nice portofolio (well I know everybody sort of uses it) is a scrolling infinite thumbnail gallery…
People just looove to speed the thingy right or left with their mice (mouses?)
yeah cause your potential employer will discover real quick if flash is something you are used to… the portfolio should definetly be as much art as what it contains, I whole-heartedly agree with that statement…a portfolio is and should be the culmination of every skill you’ve learned in that area…make it fresh, make it original, and show off!
sorry; think I was a bit misunderstood there hehe.
I meant that flash sells. A lot of clients (at least where I come from…which isn’t saying much :P) will want flash for flash’s sake. Even when it is completely unpractical.
I agree that Flash holds a lot of power, and a whole lot can be done with it. But you just need to make sure that it is needed IMO. As for the flash vs. html comment; I’ve just always preferred the look of how html appears on a page as opposed to Flash. Not a comment on functionality; just a personal preference. Each have their merits and learning both to a good extent will only make you a well rounded individual
i like flash cause its so fast, no loading pages every link you click usually.
browse a big flash site on a P3 400 and 56k and you’ll see flash be not-so-fast
but i agree; the fact that once a page is loaded, its loaded is a very nice thing. There are ways to make html loadtime very minimal…but it can get real ugly real quick; and cross platform testing is a (*&^!!
believe me with a good understanding of AS you CAN do anything and keep it between 50 to 200k
And as to html i agree it’s clean, but try 2 different browsers you’ll never see the same thing…
Just use a combination of both…
i was talkin about the cpu strain some particular animations can have
at least we agree that one should use what works best for the given item

You’re absolutely right. But very few people practice restraint on filesize with flash. People are pushing the size limit constantly. Very few people can create something under 200K… and now people almost alway have each sections have its own preloader. The wait time for an HTML page is much easier and ofcourse the text is displayed right away.

That only applies to sites created by people who don’t know how to make a cross-browser compatible site.
Thank u guys!.
