I am having problems with images not displaying in my XML Photo Gallery.
I have downloaded and set up a Flash page that features one of the MX 2004 scripts, which uses XML to pull images into a gallery. The page and tutorial is at:
Photo Gallery Using XML and Flash

I downloaded and used as a starting point the Flash MX 2004 version of the file , as available and located at the bottom of page 9 of the tutorial:

I am using Flash 8, which converted the original MX 2004 file just fine.

At first, I thought that the problem was that when I replaced the image calls in the XML file with the absolute URLs for the ones I need, suddenly the image files didn’t display.

To test and better understand this issue, I uploaded one of Kirupa’s images to my server and called it from there – I found that it worked fine.
-
I examined the Kirupa image and noted that it is a standard JPEG. The only differences between his and mine were file size: his was about 12 KB, mine were about 35 KB.
-
When I pulled the compression slider down to 30 percent, I got mine to 15 KB, with the usual loss in quality. However, when I uploaded those variants of the original images, reduced in file size, they worked fine as well! You will find the result in the swf file, above.
-
It appears that if the image is larger than something like 15 KB or perhaps 20 KB, it does not display.
Is there a way to overcome this limitation? Is there a better preloader? Does this mean that a dial-up modem user would never see any images, as one could surmise that the load time (bandwidth) issue is to blame here? On the other hand, if the script can’t handle 35 KB of images, that is a real problem. Ideas?
