can anyone tell me if either the ipod or ipod mini supports direct mp3 encoding from a line in source?

AFAIK, it does not. Rumor has it cough that the next gen might have such capabilities in the chip… now, whether or not Apple decides to enable it is the real question. You can get a microphone accessory for the iPod, but i think it records on a mono wav file.
