Long Walks May Prevent Alzheimer’s
Diseases which lead to a decline in mental functioning such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia could be staved off by moderate exercise. Two studies have concluded that elderly people who have regular long walks are less likely to see such ailments.
University of Virginia Health System biostatistician Robert Abbott says “We now have evidence that regular walking is also associated with benefits that are related to cognitive function later in life.” He studied 2,257 Hawaiian Asian-American men.
The men aged between 71 and 93 and the men who failed to take long walks were 1.8 times more likely to see a decline in mental functioning. A study by Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital looked at women and had similar findings.
This is why I have little faith in a lot of research results these days. Sounds good doesn’t it, walk a little and help cognitive function.
Without looking at the study, subjects and their details. I claim that it isn’t walking that helps. It is not watching TV. The people who didn’t walk were watching TV and that rots the brain. The walking had nothing to do with helping.
Or I say those who walked were more concerned with their health, and so ate less bacon and eggs. It is eating bacon and eggs that make you 1.8 times more likely suffer metal decline.
Or it is the people who are walking are more happy with their lives, and it is their positive emotions that help them, or perhaps they get more sex because they are fitter.
My point, it is impossible to measure and take into account all the different variables that could have an effect on ones cognitive abilities latter in life. To claim that walking has an effect is just ludicrous.
I see more and more pointless studies like this that make ridiculous claims without any real scientific support.
But then I remember that 1 University professor here in Australia was given a $100,000 dollar grant to study if Jesus was gay.
It’s a shame how bad some scientists can be. They have shown that a large number of Biological studies actually studied the wrong bacteria; that other studies have made claims due to poor statistical analysis.
Medical journals are now going to forcing pharmaceutical companies to release details of all their trials, not just the ones that are favorable to them, or they won’t be published.
I find incompetent scientists like these offensive…. If I had to compare them to someone, I would compare them to pedophile priests who molest children.
I mean they are given grants of $100,000+ to do a study, and due to their incompetence they claim things because they can’t do the math’s, or they are to stupid not to contaminate their cultures. What you end up with is $100,000 flushed down the toilet and even worse false claims that can have other researcher basing their work off.
If you hired a programmer to write you a program, and after a years work and $100,000 you were left with thousands of lines of code that did nothing, you would sue them an probably press criminal charges against them for fraud.
But not a scientist, even if they know they are wrong or made a mistake, they don’t want to turn around and admit wasting a year or more and $100,000+. If they did this they would have a tough time getting another grant, and if you don’t get published it makes it harder to get grants.
The whole set up encourages cover up and deception.
Ah well that’s my rant for the day on a topic that gets up my arse….
