OMG I have to vent. I have been working on what was supposed to be a 7 day consulting project to full-text index about 600GB of documents. Then search phrases in these documents, and finally copy the files that meet the search requirements to another drive. I acctually have my senior devloper working on this, but because of all the insanity, it is taking us both.
When we started the project, we were told the files to be indexed were Office documents and stuff like that, and that we would import the docs, full-text, search and copy the results. Well after my developer flys out to Conneticut on Sunday he finds out from them that they want to run the searches. Ok, not that big of a deal except now not only do we have to write the code to do the search, we have to make it idiot proof so that they can use it. First out of scope part. Next, they were to provide 2 dual Xenon 2.4Ghz 4GB RAM machines to run this stuff, well they do, except one of them has a netwrok issue and it takes 30 minutes to copy 5 MB of files! Not 5GB, 5 megabytes! On a 1 Gigibit fiber network! That sould take about 1 second! Second out of scope part. Then he and I have been working since Wednesday at 5pm until now (we took literally 2 hours between 8am and 10am to sleep). Now we are beginning the import of these documents, and the indexing starts blowing up. I look at it and this folder where all these (357,000) files are and there are all kinds of files. I literally found a folder in ther called Pamela’s C Drive. We are importing DLLs and executable and all kinds of other system files that are causing the index server to choke. You cannot full-text index a DLL!!! Third out of scope part.
Now as if all this is not bad enough, they have to have these reults out to their lawyers Monday (they are being invesitgated by the SEC I think). So, it is Thursday night and we have just about nothing done. I think I am making about 30 cents and hour on this project. $7,000 is not worth the ulcer I am getting!!!
**edit - I forgot to mention that the servers were suppose to have Windows 2000 Server and when we get there, they are Windows 2003 Servers. I have never run the index engine on 2003. Forth out of scope part.
