Normally, I really like formatting my computer and setting everything up. It’s like the new car smell everytime you boot up Windows for the first time. This weekend, I got to enjoy that smell twice within a day.
My current laptop was starting to get a little bit old. I figured I’d get one of the newfangled Macbook Pros with the Retina Display. As expected, everything from buying the laptop to unboxing it to getting up and running was flawless. Running bootcamp and installing the latest build of Windows 8 was smooth as well.
The native resolution is 2880x1800…on a 15" screen. This meant that all of the text and everything else was ridiculously too small to read. No problem. I bumped the DPI up from 100% to 150% to make everything bigger. This worked well for a while. All of my Windows apps ran great, and everything looked great also.
There was one issue - started off minor and became a major sore point. Most everything on the internet was not designed to be viewed at 2880x1800 with a 150% increase in text size. Every website I visited, I could notice poorly designed icons, text that didn’t fit well, and so on. Things got so bad, I finally decided to return the MBP. I could run everything fine at 1440xsomething resolution, but I am a man who loves big resolutions. I cannot lie.
I went back to my local Apple store and returned it. That was equally painless. The MBP was really the only laptop I really had my eye on. The Macbook Air was on the list, but I wanted a larger screen and, again, the resolution was simply too low for the kinds of things that I do on my laptop.
The Microsoft Store was on the way back to my car, so I went inside there. My second choice was the new Samsung 9 series that was refreshed a few weeks ago. I went ahead and bought it instead:
Overall, it works great. I have some minor quirks with the screen and such, but it has been good so far.
