Self writing text?

that may be a horrible description of what i’m looking for but i’m trying to find out how to make the effect of text writing itself out, like cursive letters or something…i thought it might be some sort of masking but i’m not sure how to go about it so i’ll stop there…any information on how to do this effect would be appreciated. thanks
