Sending files between 2 laptops

I keep on getting errors when I attempt to transfer files between two laptops. First I set up a wireless network, following the network setup wizard to completion. After doing so, the other laptop does not detect the new network I set up. Do I have to activate it somehow? Second, I tried to transfer through an ethernet cable. It says “limited or no connectivity.” So when I type “\ComputerName” in Run, it says “cannot be found.”
