Snoothing Edges

APDesign said:

ctrl+click the layer you want to smooth to get its selection. Go into the channels, save selection as channel. Deselect if anything is selected, then do a gaussian blur or two (I did 2pixels then 1 pixel, I think, but you can play around here.) once you do that, go to brightness contrast and boost the contrast until you have a nice smooth anti-alias that doesn’t look like a feather (I used mid-eighties here). You can also do what .soulty said and use levels (ctrl+l) here, whatever you are more comfortable with. Now ctrl+click the alpha channel, go back to your layers, and fill.

he says “go back to the layers, and fill” so I click the layers tab and then **fill? **What/where do i go for fill?

i’ll explain it my way  (just about the same):

  1. ctrl+click the layer you want to smooth to get its selection
  2. go to channels tab
  3. create new channel
  4. fill the selection with paintbucket tool (normally color should be white)
  5. ctrl+D (to deselect)
  6. gaussian blur: 8px (and repeat that 3 more times with 6px, 4px, 2px)
  7. ctrl+L (to adjust levels) values: 120/1,00/140
  8. ctrl+click the channel you just created
  9. go back to your layers + create new layer
  10. fill the selection (with the paintbucket) that is shown on your canvas with a color of your choice
you should now have smooth edges

Thanks very much for the clarification :thumb: its defintely much smoother now

no prob man, glad i could help you out

Now ctrl+click the alpha channel, go back to your layers, and fill.

Yeah, what I meant by that was once you load the selection (by ctrl+clicking the alpha channel), go back to your layers and fill with the paint bucket or ctrl+delete or alt+delete.

No problem AP, i appreciate your explanation in the first place a while back
