The Kirupa.com Tutorial Template

So, the template. What should it have?

Labeling/indication

  • author
  • authors website
  • date added (can be done automatically?)
  • application/language version(s)
  • proper meta-tag and html titling (indicate page number if applicable)

Formatting consistency

  • use of text
  • use of images
  • code formatting (and when to and when not to use textareas)
  • style sheets strongly recomended.

Navigation consistency

  • next and previous icons
  • to have or not to have an index page and how to handle it.

Source File handling

  • make sure not BMPs are used as images
  • how to handle images and external files used in the movie (keep them in the same directory as the tutorial itself? subdirectory)
  • naming techniques as to not conflict with others (since it seems most images for tutorials are kept in a common folder if Im not mistaken)

Restrictions

  • max image size
  • max width of the tutorial (do not screw with template format)
  • content per page (when to start making new pages)

etc.
So there’s a start for some ideas.

Templates: I think it would be a good idea to have versions which are real templates too, preventing the editing of portions which are not to be edited  Im not sure how frontpage handles them, but I know making a dreamweaver template is easy enough. A golive version would be a good idea too - frontpage, dreamweaver and golive, those are the biggies right? And Im not sure how you handle the inclusion of the menus and header/footers kirupa. But could that be made easier? Is there maybe some certain text string that could be used to make adding those in with a search and replace? like…

+--------------------------+
| [%%HEADERINCLUDE%%] |
+------------------+-------+
| | |
| [%%NAVINCLUDE%%] | |
| | (tut) |
| | |
| | |
+------------------+-------+
| [%%FOOTERINCLUDE%%] |
+------------------+-------+

so it can be all done in one swift multi-page search and replace. (I dont know if thats anything like what you do now or not - or maybe you use SSI, I dont know… which would actually make sense since the whole menu system has been changed throughout all the pages so maybe Im  )

Anywho. We can start from here. Lets spit out some ideas.

Wow - the first tutorial submitted by a non-mod that uses this format: http://dance.snehal.org/cssfile.htm !!! That is so exciting

why is the code centered?

And it could use a space at the bottom beneat the next/prev links methinks

of course - it’s not perfect  I haven’t transferred the contents to this site yet.

ah… I didnt notice  in that case WOOOHOO :beam:
