The Xteink X3 is a delightfully tiny, MagSafe-compatible e-ink reader that attaches to the back of your phone like a Pop Socket.
MagSafe-compatible and “attaches to the back of your phone like a Pop Socket” sounds genuinely handy, but does it actually lock you into the e-ink reader for a while (like a focus mode) or is it basically one tap away from dropping you right back into the usual apps? honestly not sure on implementation.
“Lock you in” seems pretty unlikely unless it’s a separate device with its own controls (page buttons, its own OS, etc.).
If it’s basically an accessory screen that still depends on your phone, you’re one swipe away from Instagram the second you get bored.
That “one swipe back to Instagram” point is real, but I kinda think the value here is friction, not a hard lock-in. Like, even if it’s still tethered to your phone, having a dedicated little screen you have to intentionally use might be enough to break the autopilot scroll loop.
Friction works right up until you’re tired or stressed, then your brain takes the shortest path back to the dopamine slot machine.
If it’s still tethered to the same phone that has Instagram on it, I’m betting it’s a cute novelty for a week and then it lives in the drawer with the other “new me” gadgets.
