Titanium for all!

Although titanium is one of the most abundant metals, 5th most I think, it is still very expensive. The problem lies in the Titanium ore that is mined. Using current processes, a tremendous amount of energy must be input to seperate out pure titanium. Not all hope is lost though:

Armstrong Process

I had to work the numbers on this for a class and assuming current prices for TiCl4, Na, and energy. The titanium came out to be a little more than $1,100 per 100 kg. Not quite as cheap as Aluminum, but still $1,000 - $2,000 dollars cheaper than current Ti prices. Maybe that titanium bike frame, titanium car body, and titanium dinnerware aren’t that far off
