Towards a deeper understanding of Flash

Hey There,

I’ve been programming in AS3 for the last couple of years, and I feel like I’m getting pretty good at it.

But then I read this post by wvxvw, and I started to feel like such a poser.

Because while I’ve definitely developed some strong AS3 skills, I’m missing a lot of knowledge about Flash itself, such as:

  1. What exactly happens during the publishing process? And is the result different if it is publishing code versus timeline action? Or exterior classes versus code on the timeline? Flex versus Flash?

  2. If I’m publishing for the iPhone/iPad iOS (which, as it happens, I am right now), am I taxing the device’s processor more than if I had written the code in Objective C?

What I’m really looking for is a definitive source to understand what Flash really ‘is’ as opposed to just how to use it. Is there such a thing?

I’m going to be really embarrassed if there is such a thing and I should have found it myself. But I couldn’t, so I’m going to suck it up and post this anyway.

Thanks,

T
