Trouble selecting correct object on stage

I have a question which is probably fairly simple to answer for most experience Flash MX users. I have a Flash animation in which some objects on the stage overlap. Oftentimes, when I try to select the object on the stage which I would like to open and edit, I instead end up selecting an object on top of it or below it. This has become very frustrating. Any ideas on how I can easily select the object I want? Thank so much
