Typewriter Effect & Navigation

I want the navigation of the site to play as a movie and type itself out (relatively quickly) and then act like a functioning navigation. I obviously don’t want to do that letter by letter non-sense. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My name is Blake. I’m new to this form, so don’t be too surprised if I don’t get the hang of this too fast… lol … you’ll bee hearing alot more from me --------- but anywayz ----------

I got a simple yet effective solution for you.

USE A MASK (MINI TUTORIAL):

  1. type out the whole paragraph or page (or whatever text you want) on one layer called text.
    <note: it dosn’t matter what color you pick right now so don’t be picky, also you have to use static text for this to work>

  2. spell check it and grammer check it!!! if you mess up you have to go back and do the whole thing over!!! so make shure you text says exsactly what you ment/wanted it to say.

  3. create a new layer BELOW the one entitled “text” , and name it box. on this layer draw a rectangle and make it the color that you want your text.

  4. you can probly see where this is going by now… now on the layer called “box” create a simple shape tween that streches the rectangle from the left side of the text to the right.

  5. rightclick on the layer called text and click on mask <the text layer must be above the box layer to mask it>.

  6. now compile this animation to see how it looks

-------- i know that this dosn’t create a “typing” effect, but if you take this same tutorial and apply the same kind of mask to each line of text that you write it looks just like it. then all you ave to do is make a cursor that follows the mask --------

feel free to play with this a little bit.

or too keep the file size small, type everything in ms paint <i use paint more than photoshop> now copy the whole thing and past it into photoshop. now make all of the text transparent and save as a transparent gif or a pin file. import it into flash and use the same box layer under the image… and wala! no mask needed

I’m not sure if there is an EASY way to do it in flash. I used Swish before I got into real Flash and I remember that it had a pretty good typewriter effect. If you happen to have that program you can import the *.swf into flash and there ya go.

hmm i have Swish but it seemed alittle more confusing that Flash…i’ll have to open it up again and take a stab at it.

you can and must do it letter by letter, but not tweening it:

follow that tut… the effect is fast and you can add typewriter sound too - even the sound of a new line (something like brrrrr-bjjjit - whatever)
all you have to do is use a better font and choose your own animations for the letters…

I thought Swish was A LOT easier than Flash. In fact, I had a hard time making the transition, because I could do just about anything that I wanted to do in Swish and it took a fraction of the time. Of course, the downfall of Swish is its actionscripting, but for $50 it’s an awesome program.

yeah…it’s really easy to do in swish.

just go to, edit–>insert text. type what you want. go up to add effect–>typewriter. and boom you have a typewriter effect.

now to make that text a link, just go to Actions tab, then go to Add Event–>On Release. Then go to Add Action–>GoToURL. and boom you have a link.
