What are your general rules

… when setting up your Flash movies, specifically those that will ultimately be a website?

I am in the process of putting mine together, and in the back of mind, I’m always wondering whether I should be building it differently for ease of management later down the line.

Specifically I’m talking about communicating with external .swfs rather than having one large movie.

While I have decided that all of my main content will be in external .swfs, I was also wondering I should do this with my navigation.

What rules of thumb do you generally use?

Cheers. YP

following is my personal oppinion:

  • common loading: when it says 100%, it must really load stuff. i hate when i wait 5 minutes for site to load and then clicking first menu item brings me to another loading screen;

  • subcontent loading: sure you can’t load everything together, so i agree there will be more loading screens for second level (deeper) content. in this case, when you load both text and images, don’t wait for images - coz text is more significant, and giving to visitor stuff he came for as quick as possible is always the best guideline.

  • sound background: should be off by default, and visible play/stop button which will initiate load on first hit. why not load sound in background? because there is not only your site visitor is browsing through same time.

well, i’m sure there’s more; i can remember the most annoying, though…
