Hi,
tkmk here, I want to know whether I should use as2 or 3. Everybody is recommending as3 but I don’t understand as3( I started with as2). What do i use? How?
thanks
If you don’t understand AS3 then don’t use it. You don’t HAVE to use it just because it’s the newest language. I’ve been using AS1/AS2 for 6 years and haven’t had a problem.
AS3 would be good for you if you were going to utilize it.
What don’t you understand about AS3? I’d definitely say so to use AS3. If you need help just ask questions here and we’ll help.
AS3 hands down. Its just set up so much better than AS2. Plus AS2 will be killed off eventually by Adobe.
AS3 is the future of flash and will be the language for a long while, so I like sirisian HIGHLY suggest you learn it. Plus it acts like other programming languages so its easy to switch from language to language.
Once you understand AS3 there are plenty of things that are easier to do in AS3 than AS2. Also the performance is better.
There are some areas where you still need to use AS2, for example Flash Lite, which is installed on some phones only can run AS2, and a lot of advertisers have the restriction that they’ll only take player 8 banner ads, which means AS2.

Not to mention if your making a flash game for the Wii which is stuck in flash7 and those AS1 sadly.

Well, you see,
I am used to putting the code into the MC, but it doesn’t work in as3, and the error messages are really WEIRD.
well i havnt had any problems with as2 yet and as3 has caused me problems when i tried it but with the coding in the mcs you should avoid that anyway if possible you should always put it on the timeline anyways.
Well tkmk, i started with as2 about two months ago, and i managed to learn a decent bit of it within this time period, didn’t i? Similarly As3 will take a bit of time to learn, so keep trying…
I am planning on moving to as3 too, but i haven’t left off as2, i am just learning as3 in the background. But from what i can see, if you want to learn as3 fast, then you better start afresh, as3 is a huge leap from as2, and there are too many common and different features in both, that it is very easy to lose yourself if you have as2 in mind while learning as3. For example, you will find mouseMove is as3 and as2, but unlike as2, it will only function when the mouse is actually on top the object calling the function. Also the “Outside Looking In” is kindof hard to grasp at first, but as you keep practicing, you will find it just as easy as as2 is to you now.
Go to senocular’s site, it has a very good article on as3, and i am just following that to help me move on. Also, try to use a IDE like FlashDevelop which has a more coding oriented environment. If you learn using that, moving will be easier for you.
What is senocular’s site?

How is AS2 going to be killed off? Are you talking with experience from AS1. I just assumed it would slowly die off…
