Ugh. I was going to delete this post, 'cause I hate complaining, but it’s true: I’m seriously worrying about my future.
Here I am, at my “temporary job”, having nothing to do, thinking too much probably, I don’t know. Anyway, here’s my blah:
I’m going to start a new life soon. First moving to Brussels with a friend, to attend 4 years of film school. I’m both excited and very scared, 'cause I wonder what this “film future” will bring me. The thing is, I already have a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, just like the mate I’m going to live with. He’s working too now (since 7 months or so), and has a good job compared to mine. It pays more, and he’s quite the IT guy in the company he works for. He even gets to fly abroad for his work (Florida for a week in September). I received a call from that company to let me know I could start working for at least one month there (the one month thing is another story). They even told me that if they’re satisfied, they would like me to sign an unlimited contract, 'cause my friend has too much work on his own and they would like to have their IT section growing… That’s all super and all, and that’s why I’m worrying now. I wonder if after those 4 years I will be able to make a living for myself… I mean, while my friend is making money and living quite well (makes about 1900 euro a month) I will be studying, and after that, hoping for work.
I don’t even know how much the salary is for a young director. Commercials or film.
Steven Spielberg and all that is cool of course, but am I flying too high? OK, I know that if this doesn’t work out I can fall back on my previous degree, but after 4 years a lot of my “computer knowledge” (especially programming languages) will be gone…
I’ll be 26 when I finish those 4 years…
OK, that’s it… sigh I know this sounds sad, but I’m quite “down” right now.
Ick, you worry? I worry about way too many things. My #1 worry is what others think of me. I’m so frikin paranoid over it. But anyways.
Your situation just needs a smoke. I’m not encouraging it, but if you do happen to smoke, this would be a good time to do so. Other than that, I’m thinking you’ve got lots of stuff to go on. If your film career fails, which is unlikely because theres always commercials you can do, falling back to computers will always be your safeway out. You’ve got it made then. :thumb:
if you have the ambition and drive (which i think you have) then you will suceed in whatever career path you choose to follow. As for your computer knowlege, this is somthing most people can’t forget. You will always remember things when you need to
Dont worry about the future, it won’t do you any good. This big life change of yours is going to be amazing and you will look back at this thread and think “Bloody hell! how stupid was I?”.
Even if film doesn’t work out for you, you seem to have plenty of skills to fall back on. As for your friend, dont compare things to him - hes a different person!
I seriously think you will do well mate and have no real reason to worry.
Ok let’s see. As you know I’m wanting to be a director too, hte media industry is a very unsure one :-\ It’s not like a normal job where you’re certain for work and you have a certain wage. After that I know it’s still what I want to do, I can feel it :beam: It’s up to you wether you want to do it too.
It’s a tricky one about your past, I’ve started training to be a director as early as possible whereas you’ve got qualifications and its as though you’re taking a step back. I really don’t know what to say on that matter. :-\
Is this film school good? Which one is it?
Well its ultimatly up to you, which door are you going to go through? The IT door, where you definitly have a job lined up, for a while anyway. Or the uncertain film door? Up to you dude

Unfortunatly that’s not true :-\ Theres never going to be any sure work
Maxtr0sity: Like Soul said, there’s never a sure task waiting for you the next month. There are contracts and stuff though… but not like any “normal” job.
OrangeOne: True, he is a different person, but we are friends for 10 years now… we did the same studies and everything. You know, a childhood friend. It’s difficult not to compare his current job to mine…
Anyway, thanks for cheering me up man. I hope I have enough ambition and drive, it’s just one of those moments… it’s like my world is falling appart for a minute.
Soul: The film school I’m going to is “Rits”, the most famous film school in Belgium. Basically you go there if you want to make it (in Belgium that is, the rest is up to you really) in the Belgian media. This industry is indeed very unsure, but I feel like this is something I really want to do. This is almost a question with no answer, but do you know how much a beginning director makes on a movie? Or a commercial? I know this will be probably be from $1,000 to $3,000,000, but still, what did you hear?

Cool sounds good! One thing I would suggest is… before giving up 4 years of your life, make a small no-budget film first. How do you know this is what you want to do, without trying it first. You might learn that you love it, like you think, or learn you hate it. Its glamour loses its appeal very quickly once you’ve got the heaps of stress
lol theres no way I can answer the question about wage. Some directors do loads of things, some don’t get any work! But don’t think you’re going to be directing huge-budget feature films anytime soon, unfortunatly that doesn’t happen!
I don’t think there’s such a thing as job security these days, not for anyone…
I’ve got a steady job and I earn good money, but there’s always the risk that one day they could turn round and change their minds, especially now we’ve been bought out by another, bigger company.
sigh Life is so complex! Let’s all just give up our lives and go live up in the moutains in caves, dancing round a fire at night singing and being jolly! :beam:
Commercials aren’t stable ofcourse, it’s just an one time thing always, unless you sign a contract over it. It’s hard to get a stable job in the entertainment industry. I think it’d be the hardest industry to get a job in.
Soul, I know you’re being realistic and all, but you’re not helping now. lol
I’m not expecting immediate fame, but I’m aiming of course… who doesn’t? Those who deny this are big fat liars!
I never made a film myself, except for some holiday films :sigh: … what I did is actually watch the making of a student film about a year ago where I could ask silly questions and see how everytying was made. Film and animation always intrested me. I love the combination of moving images and sound. Film, music videos, even commecials, I love the “feeling” the medium can bring.
I always think “if Jean-Claude Van CRAPPY Damme can do it, I can surely do it!”. OK, he’s an actor and has a body, but I will be a director and I have an imagination dammit!
Well up until I was about 20, I was going to be a dancer for a living… I’d studied it since I was 2, done GCSE and A Level in it, done part of my degree in it and represented my country as a dancer.
But common sense won out in the end - although still not entirely risk free, my current job is far more stable than the career I would have had dancing, that’s if I’d even made it.
Having said that though, I’ve always been into computing anyway, and really do love what I do for a living…

True. What I keep thinking is “I already have a degree to fall back on”, you know? Before my computer science studies I was already thinking about becoming a film director, but didn’t attend the studies because of my “common sense”. Now I have the feeling I have a chance to do this. But there’s still this unsure feeling…

lol sorry dude, I’m not trying to make you change your mind. Just telling you the truth. It’s a great job and I love it and can’t wait until I make it big too :beam: Which I will
