I work as a DSL Phone Tech Support Agent for Installation of DSL.
I’ve worked here for almost a year.
It’s not that bad of a job, except for one problem: the freakin’ scheduling department is on CRACK!
I don’t drive. Don’t own a car. Have never driven.
I have to take a bus to and from work everyday.
According to Mapquest, this is how far I have to go. Total Est. Distance: 15.41 miles
In bus terms, it’s about a 2-hour trip.
Now, neither of my buses to get to work run on the weekends, and my job knows this, I’ve told them this, but they keep scheduling me for weekends. So I have to use “Call-A-Ride”, which is a service from my local bus company, that’s sort of like a cab you schedule a week in advance. It’s $8 a trip to get to work on the weekend… so every weekend costs me $32. Not so bad…
But there’s this: The last bus to go past my house leaves my second bus-stop at 5:50 pm, so I have to catch the bus from work at the very latest at 5:00pm, or else I have to walk from 2 miles away to get home at night. And if I catch a bus after 6:15 from work, I have to take 2 buses, and a train to get to the same place to walk home the last 2+ miles.
All this week they have me scheduled to get off at 6:30, so I don’t get home 'till 9:00 or so. Fun. Oh yeah, to get from one bus to the train I have to walk through Lambert International Airport, which is packed at 7:00 at night, and the bus drops me off on one end of the airport, and I have to run through the building to the other end to get to the train before it leaves…
All this is nuts, and crazy, and tedius, but I can live with it.
Then I get my schedule for next week today. Luckily, they gave me this weekend off (Yay! :beam: ), but then comes the shocker: For next week, the only day off I have is Sunday.
One day.
Where did my other day off go? Where is it? I looked all over for it. Thought it may have fallen onto the floor… nope… it’s typed on the sheet as: “Extra Hours / OT”. I didn’t ask for OT!? I want to go home! I have stuff that has to get done while I’m at home, like laundry, and sleep! What’s the deal?! So I talk to my Team Leader, who says: “Yeah, they did that to everyone. If you don’t miss a day, and aren’t late, they give you an extra $25 on your check!”
Not like I have any choice, I’m dangerously close to being fired due to tardys/abscenses as it is, thanks to this erratic bus schedule I have to deal with, but now they’re forcing overtime on me, and I have to take it. And I know their not going to give me next Sunday off, so basically, I have to go from Monday, all the way to Sunday (at the earliest), and work everyday inbetween. And since my last day off was Last Tuesday, and my next day off isn’t until thursday, It’s like I’m working 2 straight weeks with a weekend off in between. And what happens if they don’t give me a day off until Thurday on the next schedule?! I gotta work from Monday, to the following Wednesday!? That’s 10 straight days of racing to trains through airports, and then walking 2.2 miles home, which is like 22 miles I’m walking home before a day off, in the cold, at night, through bad neighborhoods. Fun.
What is wrong with these people?!
