Animation in Flash Button?

I don’t design sites so I really rarely even need button symbols and I usually just find it easier to press F8 and convert it to a movie clip symbol instead of switching up the radio buttons. Since Flash saves its last radio button position on that panel I always end up having to recreate my movie clip symbol because I would accidently convert it to a button symbol. Since I don’t do effects with buttons I just assume use a regular movie clip and save myself the stress of my own stupidity

It is really a case by case basis I suppose anyway.**

ditto

even this part :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, I thought I was the only one that made that stupid mistake :stuck_out_tongue:

I bet I am the only one that deleted the symbol in the library without first copying the original shape so I had to keep recreating it over and over again though. Now that is a stupid mistake.

ehmm… i bet you are not. :stuck_out_tongue:

now that we’re talking about this… what’s the point of having that drop down menu to select the symbol behavior in the properties panel!? :-
you still need to open the library and change its behavior from there… makes no sense.

  1. ok, just so long as you dont get people thinking buttons are usesless

  2. yeah, that can be a pain in the arse sometimes - how they have the radio button save its position :-\

  3. being able to select the type of symbol from an instance allows you to reuse single library items as any type of symbol. This would be common in going back and forth between graphic and movieclip symbols where you would only need one symbol in the library to be either a movieclip or graphic on the stage. Having the symbol as a graphic would reduce movieclip overhead and keep the timeline of that symbol synced to the current timeline while as a movieclip, well you know the advantages as a movieclip. What it is in the library will just effect its default symbol type when its added to the work area. I sometimes also do that with graphic <-> button or movieclip <-> button where I might have one animating symbol behave as a simple button without having to create a new symbol in the library. Of course the movieclip <-> button is pretty obsolete now fom movieclips having button actions.

hmmm… since i only use movie clips :stuck_out_tongue: i never thought about that =)

Regards to 1) No, button symbols are not useless, but I think for animated buttons and such, I personally like movie clip symbols. But for just simple rollOvers, heck, throw in a button symbol, simple, easy, and effective.

Regards to 3) Interesting. I never switched it around like that because I never saw the point, thanks for the explanation.
