So I cooked up a new business card in Photoshop last night, took me less than 5 minutes and I’m totally loving the results.
And it got me thinking, what would the design world be like today without Adobe? I’ve had this discussion with other designers before, and every couple of months I solve a design problem with an Adobe product (usually Photoshop) I get all teary-eyed and grateful.
I still remember the first time I saw anti-aliased text in 2.5, and I was amazed. I was in 7th grade, I’d never seen an application anti-alias text like that before, and every single project or paper after that had a nice little cover sheet (printed on dad’s inkjet, of course) with big, bold, black, anti-aliased text on the front. Loved it, and have been using Photoshop ever since. I don’t know how many of you have been using it that long, but back when 2.5 came out, that Photoshop text we all take for granted now was a total breakthrough.
I may be wrong, but I knew of no other consumer-level program at the time that would render text like that, giving you that “ad-agency” look in a sub-$1000 package.
So, the poll: How long have you been using Photoshop?
Sorry for the confusion.
The poll options are the version number of Photoshop when you first started using it. So, the first version of Photoshop I used was Photoshop 2.5.1 whenever that came out, some 10-odd years ago.

I have never used any Adobe product (with the exception of Reader) ever I went the Microsoft route and used to use PhotoDraw and now their free but discontinued Microsoft Image Composer hehe.
I first used version 4.0, though never in a serious kind of way. Then I had 5.0, 6.0 and now 7.0 as I’ve changed jobs and companies and they’ve upgraded.
3.0 was the big 'un. That’s when the layers came in, before then you had to do weird things with Channels. I’ve since forgotten how to use channels at all. And I’ve never really gotten into blending modes or the curves palette, hallmarks of the hardcore photoshop junkie.
4.0 they changed all the commands around, I think 5.0 was when they introduced “save for web” and the history palette, I never even installed 6.0, and of course that brings us to 7.0, A.K.A. The Healing Brush version.
i had the oportunity to see photoshop 1.0 its was on a real small mac that had a 8" monitor and a floppy drive it was in black and white and god how much it sucked lol, ive also seen adobe illustrator my god how programs evolve lol cant wait for 8.0 hope they add some new stuff :beam:
I started image editing using Corel Photo Paint 4.0… Then upgraded to 8.0 which I am still good at using. However, I broke down and bought photoshop because of how well it works with Premiere. =)
