Best format for DVD recording / playing?

Newbie here.

I have YouTube .FLV files saved to my desktop. I’m now ready to burn them to DVD. My question: What format is necessary (best) for viewing the disc’s content on my computer AND television??? There seems to be no clear answer (probably because it’s obvious and I’m expecting something more obscure?! )
