Ok so im supposed to be on a 10mb line, but im lucky to get 5mb.
This might get abit complicated so hear me out. I will talk about 2 pcs here, the server (the one supposed to supply the whole house) and my desktop pc that I used for personal use.
If I connect the cable modem to the server via ethernet (10/100mb) I can get just about 4.5mbps.
The NTL technician, useless as usual, told me to change the “speed and duplex” settings from auto to one of the others (10mb full, 10mb half, 100mb full, 100mb half). This just made things worse, really slow speed or complete loss of connection.
Then I tried my pc, which has a gb ethernet card, this worked at about 5mb until I changed the “speed and duplex” to 100mb full and then I got a fair 9.5mb speed.
What is speed and duplex?
Why can I not achieve full speed on my server?
Is there any common mistake I may have made?
Just to verify, I was testing speeds off a 100mb server not too far from me so the problem is soely at my end.
