Charlie Rose is essential to living in a Democratic Republic

I just wanted to throw out there to anyone interested in finding a socially(worldwide and nationally) conscious, socially(same) investigative and an important mime sender for participating in a democracy republic, Charlie Rose on PBS is always right on. Yes, he spans a variety of topics, but he always engages his guest with intelligence.

I just watched the episode where he had the last four teachers of the year talk about the state of education in the country. It is awesome, the levels that those teachers are on. Their perspectives really showed me how much this country has improved, and how much farther we have to go. They discussed what works and what doesn’t, such as: they believe that giving teachers the opportunity to collaborate with, discuss issues and students, observerve other teachers, and ask them questions is essential to improving how well they can teach and educate their students. They also said that a teacher must make sure that the students know that they care about them, they engage the students pushing their knowledge further, and they have mastered the topics that they are responsible for teaching, are all characteristics of a good teacher. (imagine if everyone aspired to those three things, what kind of world we would live in?, although there are many other good qualities out there as well, maybe we should list them?) One of the negatives is the narrowing of the ways in which students are evaluated. reading writing, and arithmetic are the only ways that students are evaluated. I wonder, what if we began to specialize our children based on their performance in different types of intelligences? Another way one of the teachers believes that we need to adapt our current system is to increase availability of preKindigarden education, based on the premise that in those years before the age of 5, we learn the most, more than when we are older?

Here’s an interesting fact for all you keeping score, China has more Honor roll students than the US has students. What do you think we should do about that? is there anything?

I wonder if Charlie will start broadcasting through the internet?

Honor roll is the top like… 30% of students or something. China has more than 4x as many people as us. Apparently our education system really is failing… :hang::violin:

I don’t know that its failing, but others have some experience that say not every student will finish high school, but some claim that one in ten students go to college but I guess I was taken away by the show ( didn’t put any analysis into the program, big mistake). I was pretty much just regergitating what I heard. I think one of the most crucial lessons a human can learn is to take their own exploration of ideas into their own hands, searching out knowledge that others have shared, and balancing that by experimenting on their own. Thanks to the internet, you have access to an easy starting point, but don’t forget about Libraries and some book stores.

I hear ya. I just watched the HBO documentary Hard Times at Douglas High last week and it was pretty shocking. I think much more emphasis needs to be placed on education in America, especially at the high school levels.

I can has thread lock plz? (before I say something vile.)

This reminds me of the drug attitude talk I had with someone.

I think our educational system needs some work, like standardized testing needs to go. Thats about it, i like the formal teaching system, because lets face it not all teachers have good people skills, and I personally don’t like many of the teachers i’ve had, i either love them or hate them. Good teachers are hard to come by, and theres no way we can make 90 percent or even 30 percent good teachers. Though i think we could raise the standerd a bit

Charlie Rose puts all his episodes on the internet
Here is the one your talking about: http://www.charlierose.com/shows/2008/7/10/1/an-hour-on-education-with-national-teachers-of-the-year
