Yep (-:
personally, and please don’t take this in a bad way…
…but I feel that making a list of things for people to buy me is just a bit assumptive at best. I also feel that this ‘tradition’ started by toy companies has ruined what should be a wonderful time of year. Then again, this is my opinion, so please don’t take this as a personal attack on anyone.
If I get gifts, that means my friends &/or brother saw something that they thought I would like, and I greatly appreciate that thought, regardless of the gift. If it is something I like, even better.
I know this sounds cheesey, but after years of never ever getting anything I wanted, I decided to take the obligation away from my friends. We’ve all had this discussion, and agree not to buy each other crap just because of the day on the calendar. It really does work out better, and gifts come all times of the year, not just piled up on one day.
Then again, I don’t understand the amount of money people spend on their kids’ Christmas either, but that’s another story…
Rev
So I think Rev’s wishlist is to have no more wishlists.
Thor, how long man? I play too.
I have to agree with Rev…
Me and all my friends here have the same feelings pretty much…
Every year we just tell each other… Don’t buy me anything and I won’t buy you anything…
It’s practically a waste of money half the time… Might as well save up the money for something that means more.
And then… if sombody does give you something… Don’t you feel bad if you didn’t get them anything? I would…
I actually have nothing on my wishlist…
I have a few things on my wishlist
but getting and giving presents for xmas isn’t a bad thing tho
as long as people doesn’t see xmas as a time of presents only. And sadly, some do… kids for example!
but they’re excused…
I wish for no christmas this year.
on top of everything is my family and friends.
Now my list…
and a few other things.
:sure: do you people not have relatives? Sure friends are often like that, no presents… waste of time/money… mostly because its too many people to keep track of and a pain to deal with in general. But when it comes to people like parents, grandparents (If you have them) and/or close siblings, theres an undeniable impulse for them where they HAVE to get you something whether you like it or not and often is the case where they, despite their close relationship, can’t be creative enough to get you something without you telling them what it is that they can get you (this especially the case with males). Hense, the necessity of a list.
In my mothers case, she gets irate if I dont have a list for her. She’s helpless without one. It’s her christmas kryptonite. So despite some people’s objections towards them, lists do have their place in society.
On my father’s side of the family, we do a secret santa kind of thing were everyone puts their names and a list into a hat and then everyone draws from that one list to buy presents from. This means not everyone has to get everyone else presents but people still get some of the things they want and need (and such necessity can revolve around christmas; people holding off buying things for themselves with the assumption that it will come to them as a christmas present).
Anyway, I just wanted to know what people want. You don’t have to give it in list format if you wish, though its a common notion of the season. If someone utters the phrase “christmas list,” you know what it refers to.

So with those, your car, I mean van will sound like the inside of a movie theater?
(-:
no, mine are all gone. fact of life. thanks for drilling that point in.
and ‘getting me something because they feel they have to’ is exactly the problem I seek to avoid.
wanting is fine, I just feel it is over-emphasized, especially from the media, this time of year.
Personally, I’m more interested in needs, rather than wants.
Rev
I hear you there rev.
My family is incredibly small. Its just my two sisters and my old man. The old man is worthless.
We do a christmas eve thing and thats about it. Its all about stuff not about family. All that died with my mom in 96.
Christmas day blows. I would in the past do the cristmas thing with my current girls family. Thats not going to be the case this year.
Im going to wake up late, eat a bowl of cheerios and watch anything not christmas related.
I understand
I have relatives… But msot of them would not account their relations to me… I have two irate half brothers who are drug induced that I don’t tlak to…
My mother lives some 9 hours away and that makes for a hard time of gift sending or getting…
My dad cares not about my life nor about anything that has something relately to do with… View the past many Christmases to see what I mean…
As for my grandparents… They don’t really believe in Christmas except for my one set… Which I do celebrate by having dinner with…
But the time spending with the family that I do have left (my friends typically)… through everyday of my life… Is alot more beneficial than just one day out of the year…
come on now, this thread was supposed to be about materialism and not depressing family situations. There goes my mood :sigh:
