Connection Speed at Home

It’s reported that a fifth of US home internet subscribers have broadband connections. What are Kirupa users (US and not) using? I still have dialup at home :-/

This is all from my brain, from school, a looooong time ago… I may be wrong…
Well, a bit is either a 1 or a 0 value. There are 8 bits in a Byte. 1 Ascii Character is one Byte large.
So a megabit would be a million bits, or a million binary digits, or 1 Million / 8 Characters.
(no calculator available right now… )
So, if you get 12MBps, then every second, you’re transfering 12 * (1million/8) Ascii characters.
So if you have a text document, that is exactly equal to that length in characters (letters, numbers, puncuation, spaces, etc), it can be downloaded in 1 second.

Interesting factoid: because a Byte equals 8 bits, 4 bits (which are used sometimes) were named a Nibble… who says computer nerds don’t have a sense of humor?

Actually, the text document would have to be (width of connection-1) bytes, because all text documents end with an EOF byte

I have 3 mbps cable.

My whole house is wired with 100mbps cables. Also, we have a 802.11G (54 mpbs) encrypted wireless network running around too.

Horrible upload though. 14 KBps

dsl here, not been down once, yet I used to have cable and it was down like every other day… I love this

and I can’t imagine ever having anything except broadband

My cable hasn’t been down in years, and the DSL in my area is much slower than cable.

If you pay extra at my ISP you can get upload up to 3 mbps.

lol my speed is 82kbps upload and about 210kbps download… i just moved from chello (yeh UPC :S) to Demon.nl dutch company… and i have to say they rule…

i had terible connection with (chello/cabel) but now things are 100%

Depends. If it’s ADSL, then nope. If it’s SDSL, then yes.

Well, ADSL stands for Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line. ADSL means that upload/download are asymetric, meaning they don’t match - one will have to be larger than the other.

SDSL stands for Symetric Digital Subscriber Line - so upload/download are the same.

I have dial-up. Yeah the rumours are true its crap. I never really download stuff though i have a friend who does that for me.
