Convenience can erase the small reps we need

i keep noticing that the useful part of a manual workflow isn’t always the work itself — it’s the tiny practice you get from doing it a few times a week. once automation takes over, that muscle memory just quietly disappears.

has anyone else run into that weird moment where a simple fallback suddenly feels unfamiliar because you haven’t touched it in months?

This hits me with physical model-making in studio: once the laser cutter and templates take over, I forget how to do a clean hand cut fast.

I ran into this with password managers: once everything autofills, the one time it doesn’t (new device, weird app), I’m suddenly sitting there like “wait… what’s the actual password again? ” It’s not even that I forgot it on purpose — I just stopped doing the tiny reps of typing it and noticing it.

Sometimes when cutting wood with a chainsaw, I forget how to brush my teeth.
