Customizing the XML gallery

I´m working on the XML portfolio gallery from this tutorial

I´d like to customize the gallery and the thumbs a little, so my questions are:

  1. How can i mask the thumb, so they get a desired shape?

  2. How can I add a title on each thumb without rollover?
