In my experience, the most demanding clients happen to also be
the cheapest. Why is that? They demand the most work and
then refuse to pay for it, like I’m supposed to do all this extra
work as a favor.
We used to see the same thing when I sold cars in the early '80s… The customer who you hit with a car while test driving it, buys the car for full price, pays for the repairs, adds a few options, and sends in thier family & neighbors & church congragation to buy a car from you.
Then again, the couple that comes in, takes 4 1/2 hours to pick out “their” car, and pays $1000 below invoice, that you had to throw in floor mats, undercoating, and basically kiss his gas pedal to get him to sign, will come back 15 times within the next year to complain about the deal and the car. If “old tightwad” does send anybody in to see you, they will make you rue the day you sold tightwad a car in the first place…
Plus, you make no money on the deal, and it takes you 5 times as long to do the deal…
Happens all over the place.
That is why I urge beginners to not undercharge. It is difficult to get out from under the “recomended because he is cheap” persona.
Unflux, I deal with clients like that a lot now and one thing I learned is that you need to put your foot down and stand your ground or else they’ll trample all over you.
Sometimes I turn down jobs because what they’re asking for and what they want to pay me is nonsense. Some people just don’t realize how much work is put into a project, they think it’s easy.
at least they are honest
I worked for this company a while ago, for 3 months… I did so many works for them, they agreed to pay me $40k a year but they only paid me $900
I still remember they demanded so many things, and I had to work like crazy from morning to morning, even on the weekend. They didn’t tell me to work on the weekend, but because of the dateline end everything so…
once, it was saturday night, I was about to watch 007, and then he called me to do some research about how to import flash for broadcasting purpose… I was about to throw my cellphone at that time
ah that’s my fault… they are in Vegas, I’m in SFO.
I went there for an interview tho… they were really nice at that time, I did ask them about an offer letter or sumthin like that… they said this was fine
the reason why I I could end up 3 months was because they are in a financial problem of something, so I tried to be patiend
<soapbox>
Yup, been there, done that. Got the t-shirt, got the hat, already broke the mug.
Like Rev I spent more years in retail sales than I care to admit. I always hated clearance season., it brought in all the cheapskates.
The only explanation that I’ve been able to come up with is that the cheapskates don’t place any value on their own time, so they also don’t place any value on yours. At least in the retail situation once they left the store you were usually done with them. Cheapskate clients on the other hand present an ongoing problem. There are only three options. Bite your tongue and put up with it, drop them as a client, or educate them about the value of your time. All three are far easier said than done. </soapbox>
haha glad to see others have experienced the same thing as me.
Although, I didn’t post it for advice, but rather a breather, I
appreciate the comments. =)
Basically with this guy, I put my foot down and said I couldn’t do
what he was asking given the current contract or price. Funny,
cuz as soon as I mentioned it costing him more money, he
suddenly didn’t care so much about his requests.
I hate people…I ever tell you that? thought so… :sigh:

,… those guys are full of sh&6 **
yeah i know what you mean you try to be a good guy and trust people and they come n give it 2 u in da azz thats why now adays i want job contracts written that way i have proof because people no matter how nice or good may seem always seem 2 think youre a stupid geek that knows alot and can try to take advantage of you because your starting your company or some other stupid sh!t
anyways make sure whenever you make a deal or get a job make a contract that specifies everything in detail that way if something goes wrog you whip out the contract and say hey you signed it look :beam: lol
You want to know how to get rid of them? Increase our prices. That way if they annoy you, at least they are paying dearly. My last experience with this (I think I mentioned it before) was with a client that needed a logo. After 20 hours of painstaking Illustrator work he came back to say… Its too perfect!
Breathe… breathe… breathe… On the next project, he was told he had to provide 100% deposit and that my rates had recently gone up. I still got the job, but he didnt try to rework anything, cause the hourly rate was killing him! Yeah!
another thing freelancer have to take into consideration dont undercharge your client to get the job because there already prices out in the market wich are the standard so if you undercharge you will be hurting the market and it will all go to hell
