Digital Comic Navigation question

Okay, so I’m doing a project for a class and I’m teaching myself Flash in order to do so. I’ve never really done anything interactive, the extent of my Flash usage being drawing and animating.

So, my project is this: I’m trying to make a “Choose your own adventure” comic-style. The idea is that you follow a storyline (By clicking the next button to get to the next frame), but every so often there’s an option to take a different path (AKA, click a ‘hidden’ button that will change the end of the story). I’m planning on having about four-five different places to change the story.

Problem is this: I want to put each ‘storyline’ on a different layer to keep it all nice and tidy, and since certain storylines would run parallel to each other, I want to keep that visual element in the timeline so I don’t get confused on what happens when. But I can’t find any information on how to link a button to jump to a frame and turn on a layer to display it. I really don’t want to keep all of the storylines on one layer because that could get extremely confusing.

I realize that this is really confusing, but I don’t know how to explain it any better. Any help you could offer me would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
