Dual Boot Issues

Need help!

I have been running Windows XP Professional, and decided to install RedHat Linux 8. I used Partition Magic 8 to shrink my windows partition and add a Linux and linux swap partition in front of my windows partition. I booted from the RH8 install CDs and installed the software onto the linux partition, I included the XP boot option for GRUB so i could boot windows.

When I boot the machine, it boots the the OS select screen, where I have 2 options: Windows XP and RedHat Linux 8.

When I select Windows XP it boots XP, does the loading screen with the horozontal scrolly thingy, then goes to the blue login/scandisk looking screen… and says:

xmnt2002 program not found: skipping AUTOCHK
autochk program not found: skipping AUTOCHK

Or something similar to that… the first parts are correct, I’m not sure about to end of each line.

Then it flashes a black screen with blue writing, for a fraction of a second(unreadable). And reboots.

Please help me.

Also, when I boot into RH8, it boots into text mode despite the fact that I installed and configured the GUI settings. Is there a command to start up the ‘graphical desktop’?

Also at the Linux text login screen, it flashes black a couple of times, then goes to a screen where I have to select from 1 of 2 options… and the 2 options are a series of symbols, about 8 or 9 of them. I can use the arrows to move from one to the other, and when I select one, the choice comes up again with the same options… in code. When I select one again it comes up with another selection, except there is only 1 option. After selecting that, the login screen comes back again.

PLEASE HELP ME… I have a LAN party as well as homework I need to do!!

THANKS!!!

i think the boot record’s messed up. go into the windows xp setup again to restore it. once you do that, see if you can get into windows. that xmnt2002 and autochk sounds an awful lot like linux commands. and to start the graphical interface for linux i think the command is “startx”

windows xp setup? not completely sure what you mean… thanks for the startx command

just run the setup, as if you were installing it again. windows automatically sets up the boot record properly.
