Email Question

Im not sure were to post this, but I thought this might fit in the server side section best. I want to add a pop and smtp server to my server. Im running windows 2000 with apache mysql and php. I have no idea what kind of software to use. If anybody has any advice or names of software I could check out that would be great. Thanks a lot!!!

this is a difficult thing to do I hear, I’ve been trying to do this as well, but I haven’t figured out how yet, I do know that there’s a free email server that the same company as serv-u ftp does but I doubt it’s any good, on my notebook I installed fedora and it has an email server, but I’m still trying to figure out how to install it, I want to know too… but I’m on xp home

Yea. I have no idea on how to set it up… along with having my own emails at my own domains you know? like me@mydomain.com. Just no idea on what kind of software to use :frowning:

well… does your domain register have a cache-all or something?

might wanna try james

What is it?

JAMES is a 100% pure Java server application designed to be a complete,
portable and powerful enterprise mail engine solution based on currently
available open protocols (SMTP, POP3, IMAP, NNTP etc).

JAMES was formerly known as the Java Apache Mail Enterprise Server.

Development Status for JAMES 1.2.2

SMTP Server: Stable
POP3 Server: Beta
IMAP Server:
NNTP Server:

I saw that before but couldn’t find it on the apache website…

Cache All??

Would james allow me to send receive emails from my me@mydomain.com? and another question… Were do I add emails to my domain? will that be through the server… or is that something i need to do through the domain register?

Thanks

if you get the James better to get it installed first  its quit a task.

Ok, but is james what I’m looking for? It will do all of that?

I’m running QMail on my server. Along with vpopmail, courier-imap and squirrelmail.

One of the main reasons I went with this solution is that it allows me to add email accounts without having to create users on the Linux box.

I also found this recipe for setting it up that made it easy. It’s for Linux, but maybe you can find something similar for Windows: http://www.shupp.org/toaster/

It has worked well. Everything I need is available: POP3, IMAP and WebMail.

it seems like that’s more than one application, seems like it’d be much simpler to simply install james and have that working…

but just checking: james will do what im talking about?

I think so, but you may have to work with your dns server to get the mx and a records setup, but don’t ask me what those are, I hae no idea, my domain register just has those and says I need them for email servers… still haven’t used them but if it starts to work i guess I will

lol… No idea what you are talking about :expressionless: but I guess ill do some more research and see waht i come up with!

good idea, that’s what I need to do to
