Fields Medal winner leaving academia for AI safety is the real story

The article frames this as a career pivot, but it’s actually a statement about where the unsolved problems are. Tsimerman didn’t leave because OpenAI paid better or offered more visibility. He left because he thinks the most important mathematics right now is happening inside AI alignment, not inside academia.

That’s a massive signal about institutional gravity. Universities built entire cultures around pure research being the pinnacle.

One guy’s move getting read as “the unsolved problems moved” feels like a stretch. Plenty of reasons a Fields medalist takes an OpenAI check that have nothing to do with where the interesting math is.

In contrast, Will Hunting would work at the NSA before going to OpenAI, because that boy’s wicked smaht and would see right through Sam Altman straightaway. Professor Gerald Lambeau would probably go the dodgy Jacob Tsimerman route though.
