Flash player necessary?

Hiya!
Have a lil’ question…What exactly do you need the flash player for? I mean, when you go to someone’s website which is made with flash, on their splash screen, it sometimes’ says: “Flash Player needed to view” or something like that. But their splash page self is already made in Flash… So that’s not right, now is it? I mean, when I have this page which only has a little Flash file with only some text on it, will people without a Flash Player not be able to view that? And eerrrrr… How do people who don’t know what it is get it? I mean, I can imagine lots o’ people who only surf the net occasionally, don’t know what a Flash player is and so don’t go get it… Does it come standard nowadays or something? (Sorry if all this sounds complicated ;))

The Flash player is the only non-microsoft application that ships with Windows XP. Its got 97-98% (more?) penetration and is a pretty well known pluggin to anyone who surfs the web

For those who dont know, if by the slim chance they dont have it, then it would be up to the web site to try to provide an easy way of explaining that. Typically, they dont. They dont really need to so much. People arent (always) as dumb as they tend to be - err… yeah, anyway, if the page doesnt work and someone sees a “you need this to see the site” they’ll click it and do whatever little popup screens tell them to before they go and try again. Its a fairly painless process and the MM site which get links to pretty much explains well enough whats going on and what is being installed.

as for the flash movies in the splash screen, commonly there is flash detection that will display an html/image form of that screen if flash isnt detected on the viewers system. You cant be 100% sure about this process though so often that splash screen is there to give forewarning (or may even be made in something like flash 4 saying you need flash 6) - if Flash is installed for you, you’ll never see the no-flash-detected screens because they dont apply to you.

Ow, okay, thx. You wouldn’t happen to know some tutorial or something where I can learn to make such a detection?
