What if you have a user, for one reason or another is unwilling to install the Flash player? And you basically have to work around that person (ie send then to a non-Flash using site). I am sure this issue has been asked a dozen times, and I know a couple alternatives, but I wanted to ask about suggestions, or possibly be pointed to any threads that may have addressed this question in the past.
Well then that user must be stupid. flash is a very popular application used by over billions (maybe millions) of people. Everyone who has internet explore 4 and netscape 5 should have at least version 4 of flash. I think it come’s with it. I’m pretty sure that alot of people have had to install it to get to popular sites like adevertisements, and tv websites, etc…
just because someone doesn’t want to install flash doesn’t mean they are stupid.
when you have a splash screen on your site saying " you need flash to view this page", some people may assume that they need to go out and purchase some third-party software of some kind or go through a complicated process in order to view your site.
just because you know the benefits that flash offers my3brs, doesn’t mean the average internet surfer does. what if a little kid was checking out your site?
if one of your goals for your site is to have everyone view your site no matter what, the best thing to to would be to create an HTML site, even if it is simple.
alternatively, you could add a little blurb to your splash page explaining to the user the benefits of flash and that it’s a quick and free download.
You know, a lot of people surf the internet from work (when they’re not supposed to) and don’t have the flash plugins and can’t download anything onto their host - so - there you go…
A splash page is the best, in my opinion. Other than that, do a search on ‘flash detection’.
(-:
Well, in answer to your suggestion about doing a search…I have. I have definitely turned up a few results too. But the problem of course is the compatibility of those results.
They have consistently fallen into 2 categories. 1) Third-party vendors (that i must buy or license) such as BrowserHawk 2) Javascript detection.
I am required (because of where I work) to stick to VBScript (using Active Server Pages). And I have been trying hard to find pertinent information, but it never seems to work out for me. I am hoping there is some way or another. Oh well, here’s to hoping. If anyone does have an answer (preferably not a splash screen, would rather have a redirection than splash screen, due to my circumstances) That’s why I want to do it server side to determine if a redirect is needed or not.
well you can use Dreamweaver to detect flash players. in your first post you say “well what if the user doesnt want to install the flash player” . if your that worried about it make 2 sites. 1 html and 1 flash. keep in mind that a good portion of the web has flash, so if the user doesnt want to install the player, then that user really cant do much on the web
