Hello kirupa forum!
I am a mid-level web developer that is trying to figure out what direction I would like to take my skills. In the past 4 or 5 months i’ve been messing around with different ways to animate elements on a website. It seems there are two choices. Flash or JavaScript (via a framework like MooTools or [URL=“http://jquery.com/”]Jquery).
Now I personally never really liked flash all that much, while working in javascript I was immediately comfortable due to my background in coding graphics in C++ and basic.
I initially chose to go the javascript direction because I am a firm believer that copious amounts of animation take away from the functionality of a site and simple animation is easily achieved in JS. Also that I was under the impression that a Flash site has a chance to drive users away (due to slow internet speeds or browser incompatibilities). Not to mention the lack of SEO compatibility
Now that I know 99% of people can view flash websites and high speed internet is becoming the norm… i’m starting to question if flash would be a decent way to animate certain things like website intro’s. I know flash has its place on the interwebz but i’m trying to figure out where that place is…
It is clear that Flash is more powerful than JS and a hell of a lot easier to use. But it seems like there is a sacrifice in performance.
I know this poll will get overwhelmingly over-ran with ‘flash’ votes but i’m just curious if any of you develop in JS.
Also feel free to join in the discussion i’ve started on phpFreaks, where I understand the user-base try’s to stay away from flash except for music/video players and website intro’s
