Fonts for flash revelation

so, today i get an email from fonts for flash about how they have new material. i eagerly hop over to see if they have some great new pixel fonts. well apparently theyve designed several new super pixel fonts but heres the thing…they look like all the other fonts theyve designed. now i think i have a pretty good eye for detail. but these fonts all look exactly the same. and i realized something. on the pixel level, there really is a pretty finite combination of pixels that you can use to design an “a” or an “f” or any other letter for that matter. so, what do you guys think? will pixel font designers eventually admit, “yeah, we’ve pretty much designed it all. theres not to much else we can do here.” or will they keep coming out with lots of different style names for virtually the same font?
i also noticed the prices are dropping…maybe this is forshadowing. i dont know, what do you guys think? am i wrong?

Super pixel fonts have increased clarity over the reg pixel font. I have used a super pixel font over a reg pixel font and found it to be a bit more clear.

well I guess they’ll run out of ideas eventually… the dropping-prices thing is a good thing actually

yeah ddd, your absolutely correct. i agree with you 100%. but i think you missed my point. i was just saying that on fff’s wesite theres alllll these different styles of super pixel fonts but they allllll kinda look the same, and eventually it seems like its going to become a dying business of creating “new” super pixel fonts…theres only so many possibilities when your working on the pixel level.

The thing I have with it is, if you make your own pixel font and it ends up looking exactly like another, does that mean you plagiarized that font even though you had no prior knowledge of it existing before? I mean, like you said, there’s only so many pixels to fill. Other people’s pixel fonts are bound to look a like.

yeah exactly, i was messing around the other day and accidentally made planeta…the font on my footer…its an interesting problem thats bound to arise.

i always thought fff’s “super pixel fonts” are more than just fonts, they are bungled with “pixel font ready” containers, like scollers. I can see everyone’s point though, but i think they will be able to survive by the majority just buying their sets for the ease of mind factor (will work in flash with no problems). It’s almost like buying a original font set for a typeface and downloading a free “amateur” version that has a different name. If you use the Original typeface you can see the clarity to it for a print situation, while the copy may have its falldowns…(space between letters, weight of tail or stem)

but i have to agree the line is slim between amateur and pro version which seems to be applied across the board with fonts now.

regarding the similar faces to pixel fonts, like you said there is only so many pixels you can use, and your bound to get similarities in font faces… i think the other difference will be the clarity and useability of these fonts in applications such as flash.

good thing you cannot copyright fonts (well in some instances you can) But using four straight lines to make an “e” is a common way. So yes there will be problems if that is the case

I do like the new super fonts tho. In my instance it was much clearer than the other

…what did you use to make your font? FOntographer? I have to make a font for a clothing co.

I came across this program while surfing and making a font for the clothing co. Looks pretty good.

The prices might be falling because of the new anti-aliasing that’s in MX2004, letting you use many other fonts you couldn’t use in previous versions of Flash.

ddd, that looks like a pretty cool app. ill have to check that one out!

I am in love with fff harmony

that ones pretty cool, i got one from miniml.com called standard something or other and its pretty similar. the one thing about miniml is that theyre fonts are only like 10 bucks but you only get one set where with fff you pay 15 or 20 and you get the whole shebang…i learned my lesson.

that proggy I posted works very very well. Makes a pixel font out of any font. I went ahead and bought it. And it has my recommendation.

so your saying it can convert a font like futura into a pixel font??? could you post some examples?

yea…it can turn ANY font into a pixel font. ill post a sample.

Here is a sample:

I converted this font "carbon block"

It seems to work well on just about any font. And displays well in flash.

wow DDD, that program is nice… im trialing it right now.
